Austin is a Ph.D. Candidate whose research focuses on topics related to the development and diffusion of innovations. Using the phenomenon of unexpected industry threats, his dissertation explores the how necessity-driven innovations emerge and diffuse in response to hazards that cannot be mitigated with preexisting capabilities. His additional works examine various microfoundations of the diffusion process, including entrepreneurs’ decisions to license university technologies. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, Austin graduated from Western Carolina University with a B.S. in Biochemistry and P.P.E. (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics) and worked in vineyard management. He also held a pre-doctoral fellowship at Western Carolina's Center for the Study of Free Enterprise.
