Uses for the Other Types of eLearning Models

This lesson has focused on designing Linear eLearning courses; however, the other models also can be used effectively as the chart explains below.

Activity Centered
The goal is to engage the learner in a rich activity, followed by a summary which explains what the learner should have achieved and/or mastered during the activity.

You add these within a linear course so the learners can apply their new skills to a specific problem and get feedback.

Learner Centered
These models allow the learners to choose their own paths based upon their own preceived needs, interests, and goals.

Learners zig-zag through the lessons or topics and branch to screens that they feel they need. It ends with a post-test of all topics so the learners can be assured they understand everything before exiting.

Knowledge Paced
These models maximize the learners' time by pointing out exactly what they do not know.

The learners answer a series of questions, and then are automatically branched to tutorial lessons based upon their grades.

Exploratory
These models allow learners to hyperlink to databases, documents, or digital information sources to search for answers to case studies, problems, or research topics.

These resemble a structured research paper or a game where the learners track down spies or solve mysteries.
