Homecoming 2002 Events - Come Join Us!

Because the Omicron Pi chapter remains on sanctions this Fall, the university will not allow homecoming social activities, including tailgate, alumni dinner, or the alumni football game. We apologize to our alumni.

After appeals from the officers and faculty advisor Jim Moshinskie, the university relented and will allow us to have an "Alumni Meeting" on Homecoming Day, Saturday, October 26. Alumni, parents, and Tekes are invited to attend the meeting, renew friendships, meet the current members and pledges, and catch up on TKE news.

The meeting will start at 11 am (as soon as the parade ends) and last until 1 pm.

David Ortiz, the new Baylor director of student organizations, will give a short presentation on the status of the TKE sanctions, and then field questions from alumni and parents. The TKE Moms Club will serve sandwiches, cold drinks, and deserts.

Please bring your donations to the chapter to help pay for this event, and help TKE grow on campus after the sanctions lift next semester.

Tekes Conduct Two Community Service Projects

Baylor University wants fraternities on campus now to be greatly involved in community service projects.

The Tekes started off the Fall 2002 semester with a clean-up of two miles of highway 6 that is dedicated to TKE supervision. The fraters started off the morning treated to a breakfast furnished by Dr. Mo, then they broke into teams to pick up trash and tidy the roadside. A total of 21 Tekes participated in the early morning event.

Last Fall, 32 Tekes scrapped and painted the house of a Baylor employee whose husband has cancer. The city of Waco threatened to tag their house if the family did not paint the structure, so the Tekes did the entire job in one day! A very tearful family gave a grateful thank you to the Tekes after they finished.

Jake Podewils, Tim Dilberto, and Adam Baker pick up trash on highway 6 east of Waco early this semester.

Tekes start intramurals with 2 volleyball teams

B - TEAM - Jerry Streetman, John Spates (Our intramural chair), Tony Lagera, Tim Dilberto, and Mike Kacher gained us points in intramurals, but never won a game. At least they never forfeited a game, and that was the goal. A - TEAM - Jake Podewils, Grant Leigh, Chris Fields, John Lufkin, Brandon Young, and Travis Knox had a 8-1 record in Green division play and made it to the all University Tournament, where they lost to an independent team.

University sanctions end in Fall 2003 -- We're doing fine.

Incident in August
Following an incident in August in which alcohol was allegedly served to minors, Baylor University gave the Tekes a short time to take immediate and strict internal actions against the small group of Tekes involved, or face complete removal from campus.

The TKE MQB board met the next night and pulled the pins of 5 officers, and suspended 5 other fraters for a year.

Renewal
New determined officers were elected, brotherhood was renewed, and a new TKE chapter has moved forward with confidence and pride. The new president, Grant Leigh, is doing very well with the help of a great slate of officers.

In ten days after elections, the remaining Tekes raised $6,100 for TKE International insurance coverage, paid off many debts, and decided to move on. The chapter remains in great financial need to remain active on campus.

Current TKE officers
(Front row, from left), Mike Kecher, chaplain; Chris Fields, sgt-at-arms; Ryan Noyes, treasurer; amd John Spates, Histor. (Back row), Brandon Young, secretary, Grant Leigh, president, and Travis Knox, pledge trainer.

Some Events Allowed
The university complimented the Omicron Pi chapter for the quick reponse, and decided not to kick them off campus. They did stop social activities this semester except for intramurals, rush, pledging, Parents Weekend, and the Alumni Homecoming meeting. In the Spring, we will be a fully functional chapter again, finally.

Baylor is also assisting TKE conduct a Fall 2002 Basketball Camp for Youth in December. Baylor is paying for the t-shirts, transportation, and providing space in the Student Life Center for the event.

The young men who are left have shown an extraordinary determination to remain on campus and make TKE strong and viable -- and so far they are doing great as evidenced by 7 new pledges.

When you return at Homecoming, you will meet some very fine young men you will be proud of!
See you then! Dr. Mo
