You have completed Topic 2 that taught you about the transdermal barrier.
Remember these key points:
- Transdermal systems work by the process of diffusion: molecules moving
from an area of high concentration to one of lower concentration.
- Transdermal systems must penetrate a barrier (stratum corneum) in order
to be effective.
- There are three pathways of diffusion through the stratum corneum.
- Transdermal system drugs must have these properties: low molecular weight,
water and lipid soluble, high lipophilicity, and high potency.
