Can't
Find Entrepreneurial Gene
Jeff
McMullen shakes his head at the idea that entrepreneurial behavior
is the exclusive domain of rugged individualists. McMullen, who
studies entrepreneurial decision-making, prefers to focus upon the
situational characteristics people find themselves in rather than
some defining personality trait as the predictor of such behavior.
Despite a seemingly exhaustive search, researchers have not found
the entrepreneurial gene, he said. Life is too complex.

Comes with Surprises
The
results Dr. James A. Roberts finds a bit surprising when he looks
at his research on the satisfaction levels of the self-employed
is not that they find fulfillment in their new roles, but that their
levels of job satisfaction register only a fraction higher than
those who work for an organization.

Wall
Street Journal: Reichenstein on the Bond Market
"It's
virtually impossible for a manager in the high-grade U.S. bond market
to add more than 0.25% in annual returns over the long run,"
says William Reichenstein, an investments professor at Baylor University
in Waco, Texas. "If you're talking about a fund with 1% expenses
versus another with 0.25%, there's no way that the high-cost fund
can overcome the expense burden and compete with the low-cost fund."

Scott County know the costs before gambling on the ponies?
Much
of that money comes from a small segment of the population, according
to a study by Earl Grinols, a Baylor University economics professor.
Grinols, who points out with pride that he has taken no funding from
advocates on either side of the matter, has been studying the economics
of gambling since 1991. He concluded: Just 10 percent of the population
accounts for two-thirds to three-fourths of all wagers nationwide.
Thirty to 50 percent of all gambling revenue comes from people with
a problem.

Second Battle of Gettysburg
Earl
L. Grinols, of Baylor University economics professor, is nationally
recognized for conducting studies that measure the benefits and costs
of introducing gambling. He likens Gettysburg's situation to Branson,
Mo., the town with dozens of country music theaters that in 2004 rejected
a gambling proposal because it would too dramatically alter the town's
existing image and probably economically detract from its music franchise.
