Presentation Format and Information Load Effects on
Judgment and Recall in a Risk
Analysis Task
The increase in the availability of microcomputers has greatly increased the amount of information available to decision makers. The availability of inexpensive graphics software has also increased the formats available to decision makers for reporting this information. Information load and presentation format have been demonstrated to influence decision performance. In the current study, these characteristics are manipulated in a risk judgment task to examine their effects on decision accuracy and recall performance. The results of the study corroborate those of previous studies, finding a simple main effects of presentation format favoring tables over bar graphs, both for decision accuracy and recall performance. The results also demonstrate an interaction effect of presentation format and information load on a subject's ability to recall specific information from a set of data.
